Becoming a Freeman of Leicester

Who can apply?

To become a Freeman the candidate must be male, at least 18 years old and be able to prove that he is a descendant of a hereditary Freeman of the city, through the male line.

Alternatively, they can complete an apprenticeship to a Freeman of Leicester.

Some of the restrictions to becoming a Freeman have been changed over the years and it is no longer required that they were born or reside in Leicestershire.

The Freedom can now be taken up by any male (not just the eldest son) wherever they were born or are currently residing providing they can prove a direct male line to a Freeman of Leicester.

Any application to become a Freeman of Leicester should be made to:-

Leicester
LE1 6ZG.




What information is required?

You will need to provide the following information:

Full name and address

Full birth certificate

Father's full birth certificate

Father's Freedom certificate (or that of a relative from whom you are claiming the Freedom)

Description of your trade or profession

If any of the above information cannot be found then please contact Miss Alexis Wood who is also at the above address.

Miss Wood will advise regarding what action should be taken.

Making Free Ceremony for a Canadian Freeman

This was a special making Free ceremony arranged for Chris Johnson during his visit to England from Canada during 2005.
